We allocate train paths for the current
and next timetable.

Network Statement

train-paths.ch is responsible for establishing Chapter 4 of the infrastructure managers Network Statements. Chapter 4 sets down the conditions for applying for train paths.

Resolving conflicts between applications
When we identify conflicts between applications for train paths and ancillary services, our first step is to look for alternatives that would allow all the trains to run, this process includes all the railway undertakings and timetable compilers involved. If we cannot find an amicable solution, we decide who is to be awarded the train path on the basis of the statutory rules.

Allocating train paths for the next annual timetable
All the railway undertakings must make their applications anew every year. They do not have the right to roll-over their existing train paths. Our role in the train path application process is to coordinate the applications, resolve conflicts and allocate the train paths.

Allocating ad hoc train paths in the current timetable
Railway undertakings may also apply for train paths in the current timetable so that they can introduce new or amended services. However, they can only make use of the capacity which still remains. We publish details of the capacity remaining for freight traffic on transit axes periodically.

Approving the timetable
All the train paths are allocated by us; by allocating the train paths we approve the timetable. Railway undertakings therefore have a guarantee that their timetable aspirations have been handled impartially and in the best possible way.
